New Zealand Hunting Record Book Red Stag & Fallow Deer

New Zealand is renowned for its exceptional hunting opportunities, particularly for red stag and fallow deer, both of which are coveted trophies for hunters around the world. In 2024, I had the privilege of embarking on a hunt that would ultimately place two extraordinary specimens in the New Zealand Hunting Record Book—an experience I will never forget.

The hunt began in the Southern Alps, an area known for its breathtaking beauty and prime hunting grounds. These mountains, with their dense forests, rugged hills, and secluded valleys, create an ideal habitat for red stag and fallow deer. The challenge was real, with both species offering unique challenges that made the hunt even more rewarding.

The first trophy of the hunt was a magnificent red stag. These creatures are known for their majestic antlers, which can grow to impressive sizes. This particular stag, with an incredible rack, was truly a sight to behold. His antlers had an incredible spread and deep tines, which made him stand out among other stags. After several days of tracking and waiting, I finally spotted him at dawn, grazing on the side of a steep hill. The shot was challenging, given the terrain, but after carefully calculating the distance and wind, I made the shot. The stag dropped swiftly, and I approached him with a deep sense of respect for the majestic animal.

The second trophy, a stunning fallow deer, came later in the hunt. Fallow deer, known for their distinctive spots and unique antlers, are more elusive than red stag, and the thrill of spotting one is unparalleled. After hours of glassing the area, I finally saw the silhouette of a mature buck at the edge of a dense thicket. He stepped into an open clearing, giving me the perfect opportunity for a shot. With careful aim, I struck true, and the fallow deer collapsed within sight.

Both the red stag and the fallow deer were officially recorded in the New Zealand Hunting Record Book, a testament to the patience, skill, and persistence required for such a hunt. These animals, with their incredible antlers and challenging environments, embody the essence of New Zealand hunting.

This hunt will remain etched in my memory, not only because of the trophies I brought home, but also because of the unparalleled adventure that New Zealand offers. The landscapes, the wildlife, and the thrill of the hunt make it one of the best hunting destinations in the world.
